In 2009 BB&T CEO Kelly King, challenged all BB&T employees to provide extra support to its communities during a particularly difficult economic time. The result was the BB&T Lighthouse Project. Each employee, all 32,000, are allotted five hours (on company time) of their day to use towards actively improving the communities.

  • Approximately 60,000 hours of volunteer time is donated each year. Since 2009 more than 265,000 hours of BB&T associate time has been donated.

  • More than 1,100 local community projects were supported in 2013, and more than 5,500 since 2009.

  • In addition to the Lighthouse Projects, BB&T has a local philanthropic committee comprised of employees that organizes volunteer projects and raises funds for an organization in our community. This year, the Philanthropic Committee has selected Northern VA Family Services as their beneficiary.
