OP3 NEWS:

March is
Embrace Aging Month

Fairfax County projects a dramatic increase in its older population. By 2030, the county expects the 50 and over population to increase by 40 percent and the over 70 population by 88 percent.

During the 2013 the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the Fairfax Area Commission on Aging hosted community forums to hear residents ideas on housing & transportation; easy access to services and healthy lifestyles; and community engagement. OP3, along with business and nonprofit partners, contributed to the development of 50+ Action Plan which will be a road map for policy and actions to make Fairfax County a great place to live, work, play AND grow older with grace and vibrance. One of the first action items is the May 30th Employment Expo for those over 50 co-hosted by the Jewish Council on Aging, AARP, and SkillSource. More info to come...

Graceful Care is dedicated to providing non-medical assistance and companionship to seniors. Since 1994, Graceful Care has been a leader in graceful aging -- helping seniors in our community who need help to live active and productive lives while aging "gracefully in place". As Fairfax County undertakes its 50+ Initiative which will plan ahead for the aging of Ffx Co's population, companies like Graceful Care will be models to emulate. A few of their notable accomplishments include:

  • Key partner developing and promoting the "village movements" in Reston and Herndon.
  • Creating a new annual event in Herndon called Grandparents' Day, to accompany the AARP Classic Car Show. All the proceeds from this family fun day are donated to the nursing program at George Mason University for needy student scholarships.
  • Establishing the Alzheimer's Walk in Reston and providing teams who raised thousands of dollars for the Alzheimer's Association.

Graceful Care is also a financial contributor to the Insight Memory Care Center, as well as Capital Caring, Fellowship Square, FISH, the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Cornerstones, and the Giving Circle of Hope. And their employees do more -- they organize and conduct a Fall Memory Screenings at the Herndon/Reston Senior Center; provide free backup rides for the Shepherd's Center and FISH; and many devote 5 volunteer hours per week to provide free counseling.

Their actions are not unnoticed either! They have been lauded with many awards including the Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services Award 2012 and the AARP Community Partner Award 2012 and 2013.

H/T to Graceful Care for being ahead of their time!
