OP3 Employee Recognized by The Employees Advisory Council

Office of Public Private Partnerships - Don Smith AwardFairfax, VA - Three outstanding Fairfax County employees were recognized by the Board of Supervisors during January 25, 2011 meeting when the Employees Advisory Council (EAC) presented the annual Don Smith Award. This award honors employees for their outstanding dedication and contributions to their fellow employees outside of their normal duties.

Ed Cook, Department of Information Technology, is the 2011 Don Smith Award recipient. Cook has coordinated the Fairfax County Employee Softball League for more than 20 years. He has volunteered numerous hours organizing the registration of teams, scheduling fields, tracking teams' records through the season, creating tournament brackets and coordinating umpires. The league has grown to include 20 teams and hundreds of players; his commitment has contributed greatly to employee wellness, morale and team building.

Swaim Pessaud, Office of Public Private Partnerships, received the honorable mention award for her work with the county's Alternative Dispute Resolution program, providing mediation, conflict coaching and conflict resolution training for employees for more than 10 years. In addition, in her volunteer role as a professional mediator, she has helped to resolve workplace conflicts, resulting in reduced absenteeism, improved morale and increased productivity.

Janies Simmons, Library, was recognized with an honorable mention for her participation and leadership role launching the Disability Employment Awareness and Action Network (DAAN). Under her guidance, DAAN has educated county employees on a number of barriers facing people with disabilities including the Americans with Disabilities reasonable accommodation process; emergency management; snow removal procedures; assistive technology; and disability etiquette.
